What Does MRCOG Part 2 Test?
The MRCOG exam tests your ability to analyze and interpret data and make the most accurate clinical judgments. Memorizing guidelines is just not enough to help you reach the desired outcome for this exam. For the Part 2 MRCOG exam, candidates are assessed on their ability to construct logical, clinically relevant responses based on their knowledge and application of the RCOG guidelines and framework.The exam is built around 15 core knowledge areas from the RCOG syllabus.
The MRCOG exam assesses your performance based on different clinical scenarios. Multiple factors (including symptoms, clinical history, physical examination, results of investigations and/or other pertinent clinical data) are provided in a scenario and based on the information, candidates are required to determine the appropriate clinical course of action.
The exam checks your reasoning across four domains: diagnosis, investigation, management, and epidemiology or evidence-based practice. Each question tests how these domains connect.
During the exam, candidates are assessed on their ability to analyze, interpret and integrate different aspects of clinical judgments, clinical problems, and evidence or research.This is where most candidates struggle.
Question Pattern: SBAs and Complicated EMQs
Three hours. Fifty each of Single Best Answer (SBA) and Extended Matching Questions (EMQ) questions.This is the pattern of MRCOG Part 2 Exam. On a better side, there will be no negative marking in the exam.
Compared to EMQs, SBAs may seem easier. All that is required is to identify the best answer from a list of options. However, the difficult part is that often more than one answer option may seem correct. The best answer is the one that perfectly and fully explains the clinical situation.
Evaluating the correct answer to EMQs may require use of your previous knowledge of a situation based on the clues in the question stem. Each EMQ may require a deeper level of understanding of the situation, and may take longer to answer. Because of the question style and the high level of knowledge required, even a candidate that has extensive clinical knowledge may misunderstand a stem or may answer a question incorrectly.
RCOG itself recommends spending more time on EMQs than SBAs, because they demand more careful reading.
Why Part 2 Requires A Different Kind of Study
Knowledge of the subject is critical to clear MRCOG Part 2. However, regularly practicing SBA and EMQ questions is what helps you answer questions accurately in the exam. Through consistent practice, candidates will be able to better understand what answers are incorrect and what answers may seem correct. Getting familiar with the RCOG’s way of framing a question is also important.

Candidates who don’t have one, usually spend too much time studying topics they are comfortable with and leave topics they feel to be on the tougherside.The chancesof successlies in the balanced coverage of the syllabus and comprehension of the questions.
