The Membership of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (MRCOG) is a globally respected postgraduate qualification, considered a gold standard for doctors who specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Awarded by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology (RCOG), the MRCOG exam is a three part assessment that evaluates the clinical knowledge, practical skills, and decision-making abilities of doctors across women’s healthcare. The exam stands as a key milestone for advancing a successful career in OBGYN worldwide.
To be eligible for the MRCOG exam, candidates must hold a primary medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with a valid medical registration or license in their country or abroad.
MRCOG Part 1 Eligibility: Candidate must possess a primary medical degree (MBBS or equivalent). Postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is not mandatory for Part 1.
MRCOG Part 2 Eligibility: After the successful completion of the MRCOG Part 1 exam.
MRCOG Part 3 Eligibility: After the successful completion of the MRCOG Part 2 exam. Candidates must also have their training assessed and approved through the Assessment of Training (AoT) and obtain RCOG approval before applying for the exam.
RCOG regulations state that candidates may attempt MRCOG Part 1 and Part 2 a maximum of six times each. Candidates exceeding the permitted attempts may require special approval from the RCOG.
The MRCOG exam is divided into three parts:
MRCOG Part 1: This exam tests basic and applied sciences relevant to the clinical practice of Obstetrics and Gynaecology through SBAs. The Computer-based test (CBT) consists of 2 papers, with 100 SBA questions for each paper. The duration for each paper is 2.5 hours and the combined score of each paper equally contributes to the final score.
MRCOG Part 2: This exam assesses the application of medical knowledge in clinical scenarios with a two-paper computer-based test, each paper consisting of SBAs and EMQs. Candidates are expected to demonstrate problem-solving and evidence-based decision-making skills within the 3 hours duration per paper.
MRCOG Part 3: This exam assesses the ability to apply core clinical skills, communication, professional behaviour, knowledge, attitudes, and competencies in simulated clinical settings. The exam structured as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) style assessment, consists of 14 clinical tasks or stations with approx 12 minutes allotted for each station. The candidates will interact with role players or examiners in simulated scenarios that reflect the day-to-day O&G practices.
