You have conquered the foundational sciences in Part 1 and the complex clinical problem-solving of Part 2. Now, there’s only one hurdle in front of you to earn that prestigious Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) title: the MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment.

However, before you step into the exam circuit to demonstrate your clinical and communication skills, you have to secure your seat for the exam. The MRCOG Part 3 exam is a globally recognised qualification; therefore, the seats are strictly limited.

For candidates aiming for the May 2026 exam diet, the Priority Booking Window is set to open on Mar 5, 2026. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the exact dates you need to remember, explain how the booking process works, and help you secure your spot without any last-minute panic.

What is the MRCOG Part 3 Exam?

Once you have completed MRCOG Part 2, it is time for you to attend the ultimate clinical assessment of your OBGYN knowledge, skills, communication, and competencies. While Part 1 and Part 2 are all about your theoretical knowledge and clinical reasoning on paper, Part 3 evaluates your ability to apply that knowledge in real-world, high-pressure clinical practice.

Passing this practical exam is the final hurdle in front of you to earn the designatory letters MRCOG and gain full Membership to the College. It acts as the gold standard qualification for a career trajectory in OBGYN.

Who is Eligible to Attend?

The MRCOG Part 3 is highly regulated, and candidates must meet strict criteria before they are even allowed to book a seat. To be eligible for the upcoming May 2026 exam, you should:

  • Pass Part 1 and Part 2: You should successfully complete both the MRCOG Part 1 and Part 2.
  • Approved Assessment of Training (AoT): You must have your AoT approved by the RCOG before you book a seat for the exam. The Assessment of Training verifies that you have completed a minimum of four years of training in OBGYN, of which 2 years should be within the 4 years preceding the candidate’s initial application.
  • Number of Attempts: A candidate whopassed the Part 2 must apply for MRCOG Part 3 within 7 seven years of the date of their examination. If they fail to clear the exam within seven years, they should retake the Part 2 exam. Candidates have a maximum of 4 attempts.

The MRCOG Part 3 Exam Structure

The exam structure of MRCOG Part 3 is very different from written exams, moving away from the multiple-choice questions and stepping into the realm of real-world application. It is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) designed to simulate clinical practice.

Here’s the exam structure of MRCOG Part 3:

  • The Circuit: The MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment consists of 14 tasks in a circuit, each task based on one of the 14 modules detailed in the syllabus.
  • Timing: Each task is 12 minutes in length, which includes two minutes of initial reading time.
  • Task Types: There are two types of tasks in the MRCOG Part 3:
  • Simulated patient/ colleague tasks involve the candidate interacting with an actor who has been trained and fully briefed in the role he/ she is to play. The actor will know all the relevant details on the case and will have some scripted questions prompt if needed.
  • Structured discussion tasks involve the candidate interacting directly with a clinical examiner. The examiner will have detailed instructions about the task and a list of questions that they can use to prompt the candidate or to move the task on to ensure that the candidate does not run out of time. The examiner may give the candidate further information as the scenario progresses and then ask further questions.
  • The Domains: Each of the MRCOG Part 3 modules is assessed in the context of five domains:
  • Patient Safety
  • Communication with patients and their relatives
  • Communication with colleagues
  • Information gathering
  • Applied clinical knowledge

Critical Booking Dates for the May 2026 Exam

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has a strict booking system for the Part 3 exam. You cannot miss this deadline at any cost because the testing centres, especially popular international hubs in India, the UAE, and the UK, fill up within hours, delaying your career progression by another six months.

Here are the key dates that you should remember:

  • Priority Booking Window Opens: 05/03/2026
  • Priority Booking Window Closes: 09/03/2026
  • Second Booking Window Opens: 12/03/2026
  • Second Booking Window Closes: 16/03/2026

On Mar 5, 2026, the RCOG will send an official email to all the eligible candidates inviting them to book. Make sure to check your inbox and spam/junk folders on this date. The email will contain the direct link to the RCOG Exam Portal.

The MRCOG Part 3 Booking Process: Step-by-Step Process

To book the MRCOG Part 3, candidates must pass Part 1 and Part 2, and have an approved Assessment of Training (AoT).

  • Ensure eligibility: Prior to booking your exam or receiving an invitation to book the exam, you must have your Assessment of Training (AoT) approved by the RCOG. If not, you will not be eligible for the priority booking window. You should also make sure your email address and home address are all up to date.
  • Keep an Eye Out for the Official RCOG Email: All eligible candidates will receive an official email from the RCOG inviting them to book the upcoming MRCOG Part 3 exam. It is recommended to start the booking process the moment you receive this email.
  • Access the Exam Candidate Portal: In your official email, you will receive a link to log in to your RCOG account. Once you are logged in, navigate to the dashboard, and you will be redirected to the Pearson VUE booking system, which manages the physical test centre allocations for RCOG.
  • Select Your Test Centre: You will be prompted for a test centre. You can select up to three centres simultaneously to check for seat availability.
  • Confirm Date, Time, and Payment: Once you select an available centre, you will choose your exam date and time slot. After choosing the date and time, you will proceed to check out. Exam fees are banded based on the country where the test centre is located. Ensure you have a credit or debit card with sufficient limits and eligible for international transactions.
  • Receive Confirmation: Once the payment has been completed, you will receive an on-screen confirmation and a follow-up email from Pearson VUE/RCOG confirming your test centre.

What If You Miss the Priority Window?

Life as a clinician can be pretty busy, and the chance of you missing out on this priority booking window before it closes on March 9, 2026, is high. However, no need to worry, as the second booking window opens just three days later, on Mar 12, 2026, and closes rapidly on March 16, 2026.

This window is for the remaining seats across the global testing centres. However, keep in mind that during the second booking window, you are essentially fighting for cancellations or the few remaining spots in less popular locations. Therefore, it is recommended that you book the exam during the priority booking window on Mar 5, 2026.
