When the sun rises on March 8th, the entire world begins to celebrate International Women’s Day. On this day, we celebrate the collective acknowledgement of the incredible resilience, intelligence, and grace that women bring to our world. For those in the medical profession, especially those dedicated to Obstetrics and Gynaecology, this day carries a weight that is both heavy and beautiful.

This year, as we all know, the theme for International Women’s Day is “Give to Gain”, and there is no better way to practice this philosophy than by committing yourself to the highest standards of care for your patients. For an OBGYN, “giving” isn’t just about time and effort; it is about committing themselves to the gold standard of medical excellence. This is where the Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) comes into play.

This is not just a regular qualification; it is a transformative journey that allows doctors to give more care to their patients, and in doing so, they gain a world of professional and personal fulfilment.

The “Give”: A Commitment to Gold-Standard Care

When it comes to the world of medicine, the most important thing a doctor can “give” is certainty. When a woman walks into a clinic, whether she is there to seek prenatal care, struggling with infertility, or facing a complex gynaecological issue, she is completely trusting the person in the white coat to give her the care she needs.

By choosing to pursue MRCOG, a doctor is preparing themselves with the RCOG’s evidence-based guidelines. These guidelines are not mere academic papers, but life-saving protocols.

Giving Evidence-Based Care:

When you study for MRCOG, you are basically training your brain with “this is what the evidence says is safe” medicine. By providing your patients with care based on the latest global research, you are increasing the likelihood of a safe delivery, reducing surgical complications, and improving diagnostic accuracy.

Giving Communication and Empathy:

A doctor must undergo a specific MRCOG examination that evaluates their communication and empathy, teaching them how to talk to a grieving mother, how to explain complex surgeries to a layperson, and how to respect a patient’s autonomy. In giving this level of respect and clarity, you are treating the “whole woman”, not just the “case.”

The Gain: Better Outcomes and a Healthier Society

The beauty of the “Give to Gain” philosophy is that it reciprocates immediately. When a doctor provides high-quality care to their patients, the “gain” is more valuable than money; it’s the lives they have saved.

Gaining Lower Maternal Morality

Every year, many mothers die from pregnancy-related complications, many of which are preventable. When an OBGYN masters the emergency drills and clinical governance required by the MRCOG, they basically build the ability to manage postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia, and sepsis with precision. The gain here is a mother who goes home to her child.

Gaining Patient Trust

In many parts of the world, women often feel misunderstood and unheard by the medical community. When you apply the practised patient-centred approach taught by the RCOG, you gain a level of trust that transforms the doctor-patient relationship. A woman who trusts her doctor will seek early intervention, follow treatment plans, and advocate for her own health.

The Professional “Gain”: Transformation from Doctor to Leader

While the main focus of an MRCOG-qualified doctor is always the patient, the “Give to Gain” theme also applies to the doctor’s own career. The effort you “give” to those gruelling years of MRCOG Part 1, Part 2,  and Part 3 OSCE pays back in dividends that last a lifetime.

Global Recognition:

The MRCOG is a prestigious qualification that is recognised worldwide. By putting in the effort required to pass these exams, you become a specialist who can practice, consult, and lead in healthcare systems across the world. You basically transform yourself into a specialist who is a part of an international elite dedicated to women’s health.

The Power of the Network:

When you earn that MRCOG certification, you earn a seat at a global table. You become a part of a community that shares real-time data, conducts international research, and develops the future of healthcare policy. Whether you are working in a high-tech hospital or a rural clinic, this network ensures you have the collective wisdom of the world’s best clinicians behind you.

The “Gain” of Clinical Governance

The best shift that an MRCOG candidate experiences is the change from a “clinical worker” to a “clinical governor.” You not only take care of patients, but you also begin to look at the system of care.

When you master clinical governance, you build safer hospitals. As you follow evidence-based medicine, you easily identify a flaw in the system before it leads to an error. You set new safety checklists, perform necessary audits, and foster a culture of transparency. By giving to the system, you gain an environment where medical excellence is the standard, not the exception.

Mentorship: The Final Circle of “Give to Gain”

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we must acknowledge the “ladder.” Medicine is a lineage. The “Give to Gain” cycle is completed through mentorship.

As a candidate, you gain the skill and wisdom of those who have passed the MRCOG before you. When you earn that membership, you begin to give back by mentoring junior residents, guiding the next generation of specialists, and ensuring the high standards you fought to achieve are implemented. Additionally, the most important one, you gain the satisfaction of knowing that the quality of women’s healthcare in your region will continue to rise long after you have retired.

Conclusion: A Call to Excellence

International Women’s Day is a day of reflection, but for OBGYNs, it is a day for action. The theme “Give to Gain” is a reminder that we cannot improve women’s health globally if we are not ready to invest in the excellence of those providing the care.

If you are considering MRCOG, this is your chance. The journey may be slightly difficult, but the gain is incomparable. If you “give” up your sleep, your weekends, and your comfort, you gain the ability and skills to save the lives of mothers, the prestige of a global qualification, and the honour of being a guardian of womanhood.

This March 8th, don’t just celebrate progress—be the reason for it. Give your commitment to the gold standard. Gain the power to change the world, one patient at a time.

Happy International Women’s Day to the guardians of the future
