Successfully completed MRCOG Part 1, the first hurdle in the journey towards achieving RCOG membership? Now, it’s time to focus on the next step, MRCOG Part 2. You may feel overwhelmed about where to start and which resources to rely on to ensure success in a single attempt. In this article, we provide a thorough understanding of the MRCOG Part 2 exam structure, what it evaluates, and effective strategies to clear the exam.

Understanding the MRCOG Part 2 exam

The MRCOG Part 2 exam is a computer-based test that evaluates how well you can apply your knowledge to clinical scenarios. It consists of two papers and each contributes equally to the final score. Both papers include Single Best Answer (SBA) questions, which account for 40% of the total marks and Extended Matching Questions (EMQs), which make up the remaining 60%.

Each paper consists of 100 questions, with 50 SBAs and 50 EMQs and you will get 3 hours to complete each paper. To manage time effectively, RCOG recommends candidates use 70 minutes for SBAs and 110 minutes for EMQs.

The exam assesses 15 core knowledge areas that are crucial for safe and effective clinical practice in obstetrics and gynaecology. These are categorised into four key domains:

  1. Diagnosis: Understanding differential diagnoses and the key features of conditions presenting to obstetricians and gynaecologists.
  2. Investigations: Identifying appropriate diagnostic, monitoring, and prognostic investigations.
  3. Management: Covering medical, surgical, and non-medical management options, along with the role of multidisciplinary practitioners.
  4. Epidemiology: Knowledge about the incidence, progression, and natural history of conditions, as well as their prognosis and patient-centred approaches.

Effective strategies to crack the exam

  • Familiarise yourself with the syllabus to understand what to prioritise.
  • Practice time management by attempting timed mock exams, focusing on SBAs and EMQs.
  • Use credible resources such as RCOG guidelines, clinical handbooks and online courses.
  • Join study groups to discuss clinical scenarios and share insights.
  • Revise high-yield topics, including emergencies and rare but critical conditions.
  • Focus on developing problem-solving and decision-making skills, which are critical for clinical scenarios.
