The Most Common Mistakes Made by Candidates in MRCOG Part 3 Exam and How to Avoid Them

You have to attend 14 stations during MRCOG Part 3 (10 minutes each, no breaks), showcasing your clinical, communication skills, and governance in obstetrics and gynaecology. According to several candidates, RCOG trends, and prep resources, these are the most common pitfalls and their fixes:

The Most Common Mistakes Made by Candidates in MRCOG Part 3 Exam and How to Avoid Them

Mistake Why It Happens How to Avoid
Poor communication structure (e.g., not using SPIKES for bad news or ICE for concerns) Anxiety leads to rambling or jargon overload, missing empathy. Practice role-plays daily with actors/peers; record sessions for self-review. Use structured frameworks like PILs for patient explanations.
Time mismanagement (e.g., incomplete history or rushed endings) Over-focusing on details, ignoring the clock. Timed mocks (aim for 8-minute delivery + 2-minute buffer); prioritise key points via checklists. Join the OSCE courses for feedback.
Lack of patient-centred approach (e.g., forgetting signposting or leaflets) Treating it as a knowledge dump, not a consultation. Always verbalise empathy, summarise, and offer resources (e.g., "Here's a leaflet—any questions?"). Role-play "difficult" patients.
Weak guideline recall/application (e.g., wrong doses in emergencies or ethics) Insufficient integration of RCOG/NICE guidelines. Daily mind maps and flashcards; simulate stations with recalls from sites like CrashMRCOG. Focus on high-yield topics like PPH.
Nervous delivery/blanking (e.g., freezing in vivas or procedures) Exam stress overrides prep. Group study for peer feedback; mindfulness/self-care (e.g., breathing exercises). Build confidence via 50+ mocks.
