About the MRCOG Part 3 Examination
The MRCOG Part 3 is a clinical assessment designed to evaluate a candidate’s knowledge, clinical skills, communication, professional attitudes, and competencies required for independent practice in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The RCOG conducts the exam two times a year, usually in May and November.
Passing the MRCOG Part 3 examination leads to the award of Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG). It remains an essential milestone for UK trainees progressing from core training to higher speciality training (ST6 and ST7).
Examination Format
The MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment consists of 14 tasks arranged in a circuit. Each task is based on one of the 14 syllabus modules.
Each module assesses candidates across the following five domains:
- Patient Safety
- Communication with Patients and Their Relatives
- Communication with Colleagues
- Information Gathering
- Applied Clinical Knowledge
Each task assesses three to four of these domains, reflecting real-life clinical practice where communication, clinical knowledge, and patient safety are closely integrated.
Each station lasts 12 minutes, including 2 minutes of reading time before entering the task.
Types of Tasks
The MRCOG Part 3 examination includes two task formats:
- Simulated Patient/Colleague Tasks, where candidates interact with trained actors playing patients or colleagues.
- Structured Discussion Tasks, where candidates interact directly with a clinical examiner through guided discussions and clinical scenarios.
Some examination circuits may also include linked tasks, where knowledge from one station is carried into the next. Certain stations may additionally include a writing component.
Examiners
Every task is assessed by a trained Clinical Examiner.
In addition, four of the fourteen tasks also include a trained Lay Examiner, who evaluates communication, patient safety, and information gathering from the patient’s perspective.
