Are you an aspiring MRCOG candidate ready to face your final hurdle to membership? If yes, these are the top tips for improving exam day confidence during the MRCOG Part 3 exam on 6 and 7 May 2026. The nervousness you feel as the exam approaches is very natural. But the nervousness mustn’t get the best of you. You’ve already completed both Part 1 and Part 2 of your MRCOG. With a little fine-tuning, you can pass the Part 3 with flying colours. In this guide, we will guide you through some essential tips to keep in mind as you enter the big day.

What is MRCOG Part 3?

The MRCOG Part 3 exam is a clinical assessment of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies. Passing the MRCOG Part 3 exam leads to the award of the Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG).

MRCOG Part 3 Exam Format

The MRCOG Part 3 clinical assessment consists of 14 tasks in a circuit, each task based on one of the 14 modules detailed in the syllabus.

Each of the MRCOG Part 3 modules is assessed in the context of five domains:

  • Patient safety
  • Communication with patients and their relatives
  • Communication with colleagues
  • Information gathering
  • Applied clinical knowledge

Each of the 14 tasks will assess between three and four of the domains to reflect everyday clinical practice, in which, for example, communicating with patients is inextricably linked with applied clinical knowledge, or communicating with colleagues also involves aspects of patient safety.

Each task is 12 minutes in length, which includes two minutes of initial reading time.

Types of Tasks for the Exam

These are two types of tasks in the MRCOG Part 3:

  • Simulated patient/ colleague tasks: These involve the candidate interacting with an actor who has been trained and fully briefed in the role she/he is to play. The actor will know all the relevant details about the case and will have some scripted questions to prompt if needed.
  • Structured discussion tasks: These tasks involve the candidate interacting directly with a clinical examiner. The examiner will have detailed instructions about the task and a list of questions that they can use to prompt the candidate or to move the task on to ensure that the candidate does not run out of time. The examiner may give the candidate further information as the scenario evolves and then ask further questions.

MRCOG Part 3: Top Tips for Exam Day Confidence

1. Master Your Morning

Start early to allow your mind to settle. Avoid cramming new facts; this only fuels anxiety. Trust the months of preparation you’ve banked; you are ready to claim your MRCOG title.

2. Decipher the Station Brief

Use every second of reading time to scan the case for core objectives. Identify the key clinical or ethical issues and mentally map your response before the bell rings.

3. Prioritise Clinical Communication

The OSCE is a test of your interaction, not just your knowledge. Maintain steady eye contact, use empathetic body language, and speak with the calm authority of a senior registrar.

4. Own the Clock

Stick to the rhythm you’ve developed during your timed practice sessions. Trust your internal pacing to guide you through each task; remain steady, stay efficient, and never rush your patient interactions.

5. The “Reset” Rule

Don’t let one difficult station derail your entire circuit. If a task doesn’t go as planned, leave it behind. Every new station is a fresh 100% score waiting for you to claim it.
