In certain prescribed circumstances, the College does consider refunding the entry fee. If you wish to apply for this, please do so in writing (hard copy, not email or fax) to the Part 3 MRCOG Secretary at the RCOG immediately after the exam you failed to attend, enclosing documentary evidence to support your circumstances.

No. Candidates who pass the Part 2 MRCOG written exam must attempt the Part 3 MRCOG clinical assessment within 7 years (pro rata). If they do not attempt the Part 3 MRCOG clinical assessment within this timeframe, they will be required to take the Part 2 MRCOG exam again.

What is MRCOG?

The Membership of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (MRCOG) is a globally respected postgraduate qualification, considered a gold standard for doctors who specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Awarded by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology (RCOG), the MRCOG exam is a three part assessment that evaluates the clinical knowledge, practical skills, and decision-making abilities of doctors across women’s healthcare. The exam stands as a key milestone for advancing a successful career in OBGYN worldwide.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must have successfully completed the MRCOG Part 2 exam. Candidates must also have their training assessed and approved through the Assessment of Training (AoT) and obtain RCOG approval before applying for the exam.
  • Must hold a valid and recognised primary medical qualification
  • Must have clinical experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Part 3 assesses practical clinical skills, so candidates are expected to have:
  1. Hands-on clinical exposure
  2. Experience in communication and patient management
  • Maximum of 4 attempts allowed for Part 3
  • Must pass Part 3 within 7 years of passing Part 2

Exam Structure

The MRCOG Part 3 examination is a Clinical Assessment of Skills and Competencies (CASC)-style exam comprising 14 stations, each lasting 10 minutes, with a total duration of approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. It evaluates candidates on communication with patients and colleagues, clinical reasoning, decision-making, and professionalism. Assessment domains include information gathering, counselling, applied clinical knowledge, patient safety, and ethical practice, with each station scored independently to determine overall performance.
